Abstrak
The commodification of the art of sheep agility in Rancabango Village brings a dilemma of modernity.
The commodification process has successfully transformed the art of sheep agility from mere folk
entertainment into a high-value art product. With a structured concept, standardized rules, and high
marketability, it plays an important role in improving the local economy and the existence of Sundanese
culture in the national arena. The standardization of a clear contest system, and the change of the term
from "fighting" to "agility" succeeded in eliminating the negative image and emphasizing the aesthetic
and beauty aspects, which also contributed to the preservation of a more dignified cultural tradition. On
the other hand, the research findings also reveal significant challenges to socio-cultural sustainability. The
process of commodification, relevant to MacCannell's (1976) theory, risks distorting traditional values
and causing a loss of authenticity as traditions are forced to adapt to market expectations. In addition,
economic inequality among breeders was found as well as the threat of land conversion that disrupts the
ecosystem supporting this art. Post-pandemic adaptations, such as the BUMDes initiative that shifted
focus to the local economy through warung facilities at Bukit Tegal Malaka, demonstrated effective
adaptive measures. However, the sustainability of sheep tourism villages must be reactivated and their
management requires a balance between economic benefits and preservation of artistic and cultural
values.
